Welcome to ELEX 2117

Welcome to ELEX 2117.  Our first lecture will be on Thursday, January 4.  

Labs will begin the week of January 8.  Parts kits for the labs will be available for purchase from the BCIT bookstore for $6.95.  These are only available to students registered in the course -- you will need to ask for the "ELEX 2117 Parts Kit" at the front counter and show ID.   You will also need some components from your Level 1 parts kit (the EPM240 CPLD board, USB-Blaster, Dupont/Berg jumper wires, and some space on your breadboard).

Quiz 1

Quiz 1 will cover Lecture 1 up to the replication concatenation operator and also the conditional operator.

It will be open-book but all electronic devices other than calculators must be left at side, back, or front of the room.  Please wait outside the classroom (SW01-1021) until I ask you to come in.  This will allow me to put out the exam papers in alphabetical order. Each exam will have a different version of each question.  You must write your own exam at the location where it is placed.

The exam is scheduled for 50 minutes but you may continue writing into your lunch hour (12:30 to 1:20) if you wish.

Note that you may not leave for the first 20 minutes and you may not start the exam if you are more than 20 minutes late.

Lab Schedule Change

2024-01-16

The Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday All Lab 1 sessions will be cancelled the week of January 15 and instead Lab 1 will be held during all lab sessions on the week of January 22 (including set 2A on Tuesday).  The due date for Lab 1 will be changed to Monday, January 29 for all sets.  The course schedule and report due dates have been updated.  Note that the lecture on Friday is not cancelled (unless, of course, BCIT is closed).

Quiz 2 will test your ability to evaluate Verilog expressions and to convert a state transition diagram to Verilog.

ELEX 2117 Set 2F (Thursday 3:30 Lab) moved to Friday

Due to personnel changes, we need to reschedule the Thursday 3:30 ELEX 2117 Lab (Set 2F) to Friday at the same time.

The labs will be in SW3-3750, not in SW1.

This change will not show up in your timetable so please make a note of it.

This change is in effect for all remaining labs.

Calculating your ELEX 2117 Mark

You can use this spreadsheet to estimate your final mark.  This may help you to decide whether to withdraw from the course or not.  The withdrawal deadline is today (March 8).

Quiz 5 - Note change in room and duration

Quiz 5 on Tuesday, March 19 at 11:30 AM will cover Lecture 6 (Timing Analysis) and Lecture 7 (Implementation of Digital Logic Circuits).

Note that the lecture room for Tuesday lectures will have changed from SW1-1021 to SW1-1025.

Due to this change it will not be possible to continue writing the exam into your lunch hour and you must finish writing the quiz by 12:20.

Lab 8

You can choose to do Lab 8 or not.

If you choose to do Lab 8 then your lab mark will be computed as the truncated mean of labs 1 through 8.  Otherwise it will be computed as the truncated mean of labs 1 through 7.

If you want to do Lab 8 you will have until noon on Monday, March 25 to sign up using this survey.  

Note that if you sign up to do Lab 8, your mark on that lab will be counted regardless of what mark you get.

Final Exam

The final exam for ELEX2117 will be on Monday, April 15 from 1430 to 1730 in SW05-1840.

It will cover all of the material in the course.

The exam will be open-book but all electronic devices other than calculators must be left at side, back, or front of the room.  Please wait outside the classroom (SW5-1840) until I ask you to come in.  This will allow me to put out the exam papers in alphabetical order. You must write your own exam at the location where it is placed.

You may not leave for the first hour and you may not start the exam if you are more than one hour late.

Lab 8 in-person sessions

The only in-person session for Lab 8 will be on Thursday, March 28 from 10:30 to 12:30.  If you signed up to do Lab 8 for marks you can submit a video demo instead.
