I've prepared a short Practice Lab that will let check that you're following all of the coding, lab report and video guidelines before your first "real" lab.
The deadline on the Assignment folder is one week before the due date for Lab 1 and this should give you an opportunity to address any issues.
2021-01-18
I've made available a practice quiz for Quiz 1: Quiz 0 (better late than never?).
Although the correct answer is shown for all questions, the marking will not (necessarily) be correct for some questions which need to be marked manually.
2021-01-24
Quiz 1 has been marked. Question 4 was counted if your answer was correct. Otherwise your mark was scaled by 14/12. The min/mean/median/max marks were 25, 87, 96 and 100 percent respectively.
The Grades link will provide you with a (new) password you can use to view your actual marks.
Let me know if you have any questions.
2021-01-25
The comments are available in the Grades web page in the "Lab0Comments" line. The coding is explained in the the marking scheme document.
Although there is no mark for Lab 0, please review the comments so that you don't make the same mistakes in future lab reports. You can submit revised versions of your Lab 1 report and video if necessary.

Andrew has provided this block diagram for those who are having problems writing up a solution for Lab 2. It is a more detailed version of the block diagram given in the lab notes and you should be able to translate it directly to Verilog. You will draw diagrams like this for future labs.
2021-01-29
The Lab 3 lab notes are available along with a demo video, a sample programming file, and a design constraint file.

The first midterm exam will be on Thursday, February 4 from 3:30 to 5:20 PM. It will cover all material up to the "Modules" section of Lecture 3 (bottom of page 4).
Note that this is not a regular lecture time slot so make sure you put this on your calendar. You must start the exam within 5 minutes of the start time (the exam typically starts within 5 minutes of the start of the time slot or 3:35 in this case).
2021-02-03
I've made available a Practice Midterm 1 so you can get an idea of some of the types of questions that might be asked.
2021-02-04
The question on module declarations was manually marked and I awarded marks in any cases where the error might have been caused by not having enough spaces for the correct answer (about 3 or 4).
The minimum/average/median/maximum marks for the midterm were 49, 89,90 and 100 percent respectively.
2021-02-11
Due to the holiday on Monday February 15, and to give you a chance to catch up, there are no new labs scheduled next week.
However, Andrew will attend the lab sessions on Tuesday at 1:30 and Friday at 10:30 if you need help.
2021-02-12
The submission requirements for Lab 5 have been updated and now require a block diagram. This should be probably be your first step in the design process.
2021-02-16
Quiz 2 has been marked. The min/mean/median/max marks were 0, 87, 94 and 100 percent respectively. The Grades link will provide you with a password you can use to view your marks. Let me know if you have any questions.
2021-02-18
As discussed at the lecture today, the Lab 4 submission deadline has been changed to next Monday (still at midnight).

I've been asked to pass along the following employment opportunity. It will be of interest to those who have good language skills and are doing well academically.
The BCIT Learning Commons is currently hiring tutors to start in September 2021 with the possibility of summer work. Peer tutors are high-achieving, upper-level BCIT students. They help other students understand course concepts and develop learning skills in difficult academic subjects. Writing tutors work one-on-one with students to help them develop the capacity to plan, organize, write and revise various types of assignments and assist in areas such as correct and concise language and citations. https://www.bcit.ca/learning-commons/be-a-tutor/

As decided in class today, the due date for Lab 6 has been changed to Monday, March 15. There are no other changes to due dates.
2021-03-11
The second midterm exam has been marked. Question 2 was not counted since no correct answer was possible. Everyone was assigned a value of zero for that question. Although the web site says your mark is out of 26, it's actually out of 23. The marks page shows the actual value.
The minimum, mean, median and maximum marks on the second midterm were 0, 82, 87 and 100 percent respectively.
There are about ten students at high risk of failing (or guaranteed to fail) due to low lab marks -- if your current lab mark is below about 27% you should consider withdrawing. There are about three students at high risk of failing due to a low overall mark -- if your current overall mark is less than about 32% you should consider withdrawing. The withdrawal deadline is tomorrow (Friday, March 12).

One of the versions of the SPI interface question had an incorrect answer (15 instead of 14). The marks for this version of the question have been marked manually and the marks updated.
The average for several of the timing analysis questions was quite low because many students misunderstood the instructions. This question was also marked manually. The answer was scored as correct if the numerical value was correct even if it was not in the correct format.
Let me know (politely, please) if you have any questions about the marking.
2021-03-15
The final exam schedule has been made available. The final exam for ELEX 2117 will be on Monday, April 19 from 13:00 to 16:00.
2021-03-30
Quiz 3 has been marked.
The answers given for Question 3 are wrong. For the three versions of the question the answers should have been:
Although the calculations are simple with a calculator (or a browser), many students forgot to add 1 to the difference between the limits.
Two versions of Question 2 left out the k and M suffixes on the IC sizes so the answers were marked correct if you used the values given:
Let me know if you have any questions.

I have prepared a short survey to learn more about option selection by Level 2 students.
It should take less than 10 minutes to complete and will help the Department improve its program offerings.
You can complete the survey at:
https://www.surveymonkey.ca/r/M263X3R
The survey is optional, confidential, and will not affect the option you are assigned.

Constructive feedback can help your instructors improve their teaching. So it's a good idea to fill out the Instructional Assessments for your courses.
Suggestions for how this course could be improved would be appreciated.
The deadline for filling these out is the last day of classes (today).
2021-04-18
A student asked this question on the Q&A forum:
Are we allowed to watch the recorded lectures during the final exam?
I thought the answer important enough that it should be posted on the course home page...
The instructions forbid "communication with others". I do not consider accessing material that was published before the exam, such as the recorded lectures, to be "communication with others". You may also access any other material that was published before the start of the exam such as lecture notes, exercises, textbooks (on the course web site or elsewhere), previous exams (for this course or others), manufacturer's documentation, etc. .
On the other hand, making or receiving a phone call, a text or an e-mail during the exam would be considered "communication with others". Posting or viewing a comment or update during the exam would also be considered "communication with others". In particular, you may not use your phone or visit "social media" apps or websites (Facebook, Discord, Whatsap, WeChat, etc.) during the exam. The content of what is communicated is irrelevant. There are no exceptions. To be safe, turn your phone off during the exam and ask others not to disturb you.
Please ask if you have any doubts about what is, and isn't, allowed.
2021-04-19
The final exam has been marked. The minimum, mean, median and maximum were 0, 77, 80 and 100 percent respectively.
The minimum, mean, median and maximum marks for the course were 42, 84, 88 and 100 percent.
The distribution of final exam marks and the overall final marks is shown below:
These marks are unofficial and subject to change.
