OPAL

The OPAL project at UBC is focused on MR imaging and computer modeling of oral, pharyngeal, and laryngeal anatomy. Research activities are directed towards analysis of upper-airway dysfunctions, such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea, swallowing disorders (dysphagia), and post-operative deficits following oral surgery. MR acquisition is performed at the UBC MRI Research Center and the biomechanical modeling is done with the ArtiSynth simulation toolkit.

During my PhD, I was active in both MR imaging of the upper airway and creating models of coupled jaw-tongue-hyoid biomechanics from medical imaging data. I have worked closely with a number of clinical collaborators and speech scientists.
