I am an electrical engineer with 20+ years of experience and I specialize in the design and test of analog ICs.
Currently I am the Test Lab Manager for the System-on-Chip group at UBC, where I am responsible for managing the test lab facilities, providing technical support for the design and test of ICs as well as participating in research projects.

The sections LAB ACTIVITIES and LINKS of this site, will give you a good idea of the type of work I do daily.

Background:

I was born and raised in Caracas - Venezuela, of Venezuelan and Lithuanian origin. I came to Canada to pursue graduate studies at the University of British Columbia, and have ever since been living in Vancouver. I am fluent in Spanish, French, and English and my biggest passions are electronics, IC design, and rowing.

Résumé:  Resume Roberto Rosales.pdf

Education:

Ph.D. Electrical Engineering, The University of British Columbia, Vancouver Canada.

Dissertation: "Integrated Silicon Bipolar Wideband Frequency Modulation Circuits for High-Performance Analog Lightwave Transmission".

My thesis can be summarized as follows:

·         Designed, implemented, and tested integrated circuits for 0.5-2.0GHz operation in a high-speed silicon bipolar process.

·         Wideband VCO based on emitter-coupled architecture outperformed in range and linearity all previously reported designs for Ultra-wideband Transmission. Wideband demodulator operated as designed to match range of VCO.

·         Developed and built novel phase noise measurement technique for characterization of noisy oscillators.

·         Devised a simple design technique to reduce phase noise of emitter-coupled multi-vibrators by design scaling. This is based on the thesis experimental findings of phase noise at high-speed operation.

·         System level modeling to predict carrier-to-noise ratio and inter-modulation distortion performance of the implemented circuits in an optical CATV link showed record performance for wideband FM transmission.

M.A.Sc Electrical Engineering, The University of British Columbia, Vancouver Canada.

Dissertation: "Simulation environment for a real-time power system simulator".

BSEE Electronics Engineer, Simón Bolívar University, Caracas - Venezuela.
