Coordinator of the Project Integrated Program (EECE 201 and 202): The PIP is a separate stream for second year ECE students wishing a "design-based learning" approach to education. This program has been operating since September, 1999 and it replaces the content of all second-year ECE courses with two one-term courses (EECE 201, and EECE 202). In the PIP, each of four six-week "Modules" contains a project (e.g. "design an accelerometer-based digital carpenter's level", "design a microprocessor-controlled jute-box that will sense coins, accumulate deposits, and play songs"). There are fewer lectures in the PIP, students work in teams of six, and each week, each student team meets professors and teaching assistants to discuss academic and project related questions. At the end of each module, each student writes an examination related to the academic content, and each team is evaluated on their project (both individually, and as a group).

New Venture Design (APSC 486 in 2004-5): This is a one-year long joint course instructed jointly with Dr. Darren Dahl of the UBC Sauder School of Business. This course was first piloted in 2003-4. Equal numbers of final year students in business and engineering (from any specialization) can apply to enter this course. The goal of the course is to give students an opportunity to work in teams of six students (3 business and 3 engineering students per team) to conceive and develop a realistic commercial product. The output from the course is a engineering prototype, and a business plan.
