2021-01-07
The final quiz and lab marks will be computed as the mean after omitting the best and worst results. Since there are only three quizzes, the quiz mark will be the median.
2021-01-15
Quiz 1 on Tuesday at 10:30 will cover Lecture 1. There will be 2 or 3 short-answer questions asking you to apply the concepts and equations given in the lecture notes.
The quiz will be available as a PDF file with one question per page. You may:
Note that in call cases you must submit a PDF file. I will not open other types of files.
You will have 50 minutes (the whole lecture) to complete the quiz.
2021-01-24
Quiz 1 has been marked and the marked-up submissions are available as feedback files in the Quiz 1 Assignment folder. The solutions and marking scheme are available. You can retrieve your marks using your BCIT ID and the password available in the "password" field in the Grades page of the course web site. The minimum, mean, media and maximum marks were 0, 78 92 and 100 percent respectively.
2021-02-02
Will be on Thursday, February 4 from 12:30 to 2:20 PM. Note that the exam starts an hour earlier than the regular lectures. It will cover all of the material to the end of Lecture 4 (Diversity).
2021-02-09
Midterm Exam 1 has been marked and the marked-up submissions are available as feedback files in the Midterm Exam 1 Assignment folder. The solutions and marking scheme are available. You can retrieve your marks using your BCIT ID and the password available in the "password" field in the Grades page of the course web site. The minimum, mean, media and maximum marks were 67, 85, 87 and 100 percent respectively.
2021-02-15
Quiz 2 has been rescheduled to Friday, February 19 to allow more even spacing between evaluations.
2021-02-22
A student in ELEX 2117 (Digital Circuits 2) is looking for a tutor to help him understand how to do the labs. It was suggested that I ask BEng Level 8 students since they studied System Verilog in ELEX 7660. Let me know if you are interested in part-time work helping a first-year student with System Verilog. The details (pay, amount of work, etc) would be worked out between you and the student.
2021-03-15
The final exam schedule has been made available. The final exam for ELEX 7860 is scheduled for Friday, April 23 from 13:00 to 16:00.
2021-03-30
Quiz 3 has been rescheduled to Thursday, April 1.
It will cover OFDM, Link Budgets, Cellular Radio and intermodulation (IP3).
2021-03-31
This is what the marking spreadsheet says:
A student recently asked exactly how the final mark would be computed. Below is how I was expecting your final mark to be computed. Note that the midterm is now also computed as the median and Quiz mark is included in this midterm median calculation. I believe we discussed this earlier in the course but I may be mistaken.
Where:
We can discuss this in class if anyone has any concerns.
2021-04-03
Quiz 3 has been marked. The minimum/median/mean/max were 44, 83, 85 and 100 percent.
2021-04-16
Constructive feedback in the Instructional Assessments for your courses can help improve teaching. The Lecture Course Reference Number for this course is 78044 (see title of the web page).
Suggestions for how this course could be improved would be appreciated (different choice of topics, level of difficulty, lecture and lab delivery style, ...).
The deadline for filling it out is the last day of classes (today).
2021-04-23
The final exam for ELEX 7860 is on Friday, April 23 from 13:00 (1PM) to 16:00 (4 PM).
Note that the final exam starts at 13:00 (1 PM), not 1:30. The Virtual Classroom had been incorrectly set up for 1:30.
2021-04-23
The exam instructions say "you may not communicate in any other way during the exam". Accessing material that was published before the exam, such as the recorded lectures is permitted. You may also access any other material that was published before the start of the exam such as lecture notes, exercises, textbooks (on the course web site or elsewhere), previous exams (for this course or others), manufacturer's documentation, etc. .
On the other hand, making or receiving a phone call, a text or an e-mail during the exam would be considered "communication". Posting or viewing a comment or update during the exam would also be considered "communication". In particular, you may not use your phone or visit "social media" apps or websites (Facebook, Discord, Whatsap, WeChat, etc.) during the exam. The content of what is communicated is irrelevant. There are no exceptions. To be safe, turn your phone off during the exam and ask others not to disturb you.
Please ask if you have any doubts about what is, and isn't, allowed.
2021-05-04
All labs and the final exam have been marked and the unofficial final marks computed.
Let me know if you would like to substitute the average of questions 1 through 3 for your Quiz 1 mark or the average of questions 3 through 6 for your Quiz 2 mark. There were not enough questions on the relevant topics in the final exam allow for substitution of your Quiz 3 mark.
You can compute the mark for a question by subtracting the deductions for that question from the weight for that question. The deductions are summarized on the last page of your marked exam.
The distribution of final exam and course marks is shown below.
Let me know if you have any questions. The deadline to make changes to marks is Friday, May 7.
