Background
Yingwei Huang is a Specialist
Transmission Planning Engineer with over 12 years
of experience in power system studies and
research. His areas of expertise include power
system planning and operations, transient analysis
and simulation, power electronic systems, and
electrical machinery. He currently works within
the Planning Coordinator and Bulk Planning (PC
& Bulk Planning) team at BC Hydro, where he is
responsible for technical coordination across
multiple BC Hydro departments and external
stakeholders, as well as conducting transmission
planning studies, Mandatory Reliability Standards
(MRS) assessments, interconnection studies, and
model validation for BC Hydro's bulk electric
systems.
His previous roles at BC Hydro
include:
- Transmission Operations Services (TOS):
Specialized in transmission system operational
planning, development and update of System
Operating Orders, stability assessments,
load/generation interconnection studies,
Remedial Action Schemes (RAS) development, and
power system stabilizer (PSS) tuning.
- T&D System Operations (TDSO), Fraser
Valley Office (FVO): Developed Daily
Operational Plans (DOP) and Total Transmission
Capability (TTC) assessments, and provided
real-time technical support to System
Operators in BC Hydro Control Center.
Yingwei is a
registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in the
Province of British Columbia, a Senior
Member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics
Engineers (IEEE). He currently serves as the
Technical Committee Program Chair (TCPC) for IEEE
PES Transient Analysis and Simulation Subcommittee
(TASS).
At UBC, Yingwei works on the
research and development of next-generation power
system simulation tools, by introducing innovative
techniques to the modeling of electric machines
and power electronic systems. He also teaches a
range of electrical and power engineering courses,
including Power Systems Analysis I&II, Power
System Operation and Control, Electric Machines
and Energy Conversion System, etc.
