Ultrasound Screening System for Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

A screening system for identifying deep venous thrombosis has been developed and undergone preliminary test with promising results. Using B-mode (brightness mode) ultrasound a non-invasive test which uses information from image processing and location and force sensors attached to an ultrasound probe, was developed so that an operator can screen a patient's limbs in search of thrombi. Based on the well -known compression ultrasound technique, the transverse vessel area is extracted for different values of applied pressure and a thrombus is identified based on the non-compressibility of a diseased vessel.

This research project reached its first milestone in December 2002, as a completed thesis project. A (large, 1.93 MB) PDF version is available for download.

We gratefully acknowledge support for this work, provided by the Canadian IRIS Network of Centres of Excellence, under project IT-MED, and by NSERC under the IPS program.
