This page contains information about me, and also a bit about how the site was created.

About me...

I'm currently a graduate student in the Department of Physics at UBC working under Dr. Carl Michal in Hennings 100. Prior to this, I finished my BASc in Engineering Physics, an MASc in Electrical Engineering and did quite a few years working out in industry where I just managed to get my P.Eng.

If you're interested, have a peek at my resume:

About the site design

Graphics have deliberately been kept to a minimum to increase readability and decrease load times. Those of you who may need to view this over a low speed dial-up connection should be pleased. The entire site will fit onto a single 1.44MB floppy, uncompressed, not counting the documents. (Actually, at the current time, it will fit on a 720kb floppy zipped up. All of it).

This site is designed to be best viewed by any browser that supports HTML 4.0 or better with CSS, on any platform. However, it should still look fine with anything supporting HTML 3.2 or better (it has been tested)!

Yes, I have put it through the W3C HTML Validator. If you're building a web site, you should consider validating yours too. It's a free service by the standards body for the WWW. I'm working on making it speech-friendly as well. Is it flashy? Probably not. Does it work? Yes, and I rather think it's a pleasing, clean, simple design.

Are you some kind of Luddite or something?

No, I just believe in open standards that should be adhered to. That's the way the World Wide Web was meant to be used. It helps support the freedom of choice to run any browser you want, on any operating system on any hardware.

This site should be easily useable using text-mode only browsers (like Lynx), except, of course, for the image gallery. I make use of "ALT" tags (and other similar aids) wherever I remember. (That's for the sight-impaired)!

I've tried to stay away from stuff like Flash unless it really adds a lot of value. Why? Because blind people surf the web too! Because somewhere out there, somebody is still running 10 year old PC's over a slow modem line. Because some people, even with a fast modem line have to pay per minute for local calls. Because not everybody is as rich as you or I.

[This site has been tested with the following browsers: IBM WebExplorer, Netscape Navigator 2.02 (OS/2), Netscape Communicator 4.0x (OS/2, Win95, Solaris 2.5), Opera 5(OS/2, Win98), Mozilla 1.1(OS/2) ]

I try to be consistent in style, so it'll be obvious when you're still on this site, and when you have left. It used to be a pretty bland site (my attempt at minimalism), but after a while, I got bored, it looked way to retro, almost back to the early days and my first web pages. So, we've switched to a cleaner, more professional look, and it's rolled out across all my web sites for a common look. If you want to know what my other sites look like, try i-Pad Physics and i-Pad Personal.

In addition, I attempt to keep all information accessible within 3 mouse-clicks. Most research finds that much more than that, and people are likely to lose interest really quickly.

If you want to learn about HTML or CSS or just use my code to setup your own site, feel free to take my files, as long as you acknowledge the source. The CSS file is somewhat commented, and the HTML files should be nicely arranged and commented too.

About the graphics

All graphics, logos, buttons, etc. are custom created by myself. You won't find this collection anywhere else in the world! (Ooops! Except for the product logos...) Feel free to pilfer the graphics (or the HTML source code) on this site for your own use, provided that you acknowlege the source.

About my tools

This web site was constructed using my own personal computer, an IBM Thinkpad 770X running on OS/2 Warp 4.5. Graphics tool of choice is TrueSpectra Photo>Graphics Pro v2.02 for OS/2. (Note: This product is discontinued, but now freely, and legally, available for Windows and OS/2).
