From: edc@ece.ubc.ca Subject: Internet Telephony Talk - Wednesday Date: Tue, 20 Oct 1998 19:21:41 -0700 (PDT)IEEE Communications Society Seminar Wednesday, October 21 at 7:30 PM Internet Telephony Two years ago, Voice over IP or Internet Telephony was seen as a way for hobbyist of having very low quality phone calls over the Internet to avoid long-distance or international service charges. Not even a year later the first service providers were offering international Voice over IP (VoIP) services for a fraction of the traditional service charges, threatening the business of the large telecommunication providers. Today, every large telecommunication provider is either conducting a VoIP trial or has already introduced the first services using VoIP technology. But VoIP is more than just cheap phone calls. VoIP is the enabling factor for converging networks and allows building integrated voice/data applications. It will change the current market place substantially for service providers and network equipment manufacturers. This talk will discuss the recent VoIP history, the market drivers and trends, and the enabling technology. It will present examples how this technology will change the way we communicate and highlight the market and technology challenges involved. Speaker: Stefan Pracht graduated 1990 as a Bachelor of Science in Telecommunications from University Dieburg in Germany. As a project manager for Deutsche Telekom, he was responsible for the definition of the access, terminal equipment, and test equipment for the worldwide first commercial ATM trial. In addition, he represented Deutsche Telekom in various ITU-T and ETSI working groups. Stefan joint Hewlett Packard Company's Network Systems Test Division (NSTD) located in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1994. He worked as Technology Manager in the areas of ATM and MPEG2. Today he is Program Manager responsible for the product marketing of NSTD's VoIP test product line. In addition, he manages Hewlett Packard's VoIP test strategy coordinating VoIP activities of several HP divisions. The talk will be held at the BCIT North-West 1 Boardroom, 3700 Willingdon St, Burnaby. All are welcome. You can also meet the speaker at a no-host dinner before the talk at 6:00 PM at Earl's on Kingsway, 4361 Kingsway.
