I am interested in issues of end-users' management and control of information in social systems, with a focus on usability.  My goal is to to deepen understanding of human interactions in socio-technical systems, in order to build tools that satisfy end-users' information management needs and yet, are intuitive and easy to use for the general, non-technical user population of social systems.

In my doctoral research, I use qualitative research methodologies to investigate users’ information sharing behavior in social systems, and propose a model of privacy that can be used as a basis for building improved privacy management tools. My research consists of four phases:

  1. A grounded theory study aimed at identifying end-users specific concerns, needs, and strategies with regard to sharing personal information in various group contexts

  2. Translating privacy needs (social requirements) into a conceptual model of information privacy (technical requirements), through development of a privacy framework

  3. Applying the proposed privacy framework to a real world application, to create a test bed

  4. Empirical evaluation of the resulted privacy management mechanism, in terms of both utility and usability
