Copyright and Plagiarism

Some questions you might ask yourself when preparing a report or assignment:

The first question is answered by Canadian copyright law.  The second is answered by BCIT's policy on academic integrity.  You are expected to comply with these laws and policies.  The BCIT Library has some good introductory material on copyright and avoiding plagiarism.

Note that in addition to the usual "fair dealing" exemptions, BCIT belongs to Access Copyright which gives you permission to copy and download material from many publishers.  You can also download and install some useful licensed software through site licenses (e.g. Matlab) and Microsoft's Dreamspark program.

If you're not sure whether you need to cite a source, ask yourself if a reader could mistake an idea as your own.  Do you think you would need to cite a reference for Ohm's Law if you used it in an assignment?

Due Date for Assignment 1

The due date has been changed to March 23 (midnight).

Mid-Term Exam

The mid-term exam will be held on March 30 from 8:30 AM to 10:20 AM in NE1-412.

Note that this is not the usual classroom location.  NE1 is the large building on Canada way at the north end of the campus.

The exam will cover the material up to the end of Lecture 6 - Line Codes.

Use of FPGA boards during proctored lab hours

You can borrow one of two FPGA boards, cables and components from the lab proctors during proctor hours if you want to get a head-start on finishing Lab 7 or need to complete it after the second lab session.

Please be careful with the boards.  Do not use a power supply with these boards.  All power should come from the 3.3V pin on the FPGA connector.

Midterm Exam Results

The midterm exams have been marked. The minimum/median/mean/maximum were 6, 12.4, 13.5 and 16 respectively.

Your mark is available from Content > Course Information > marks. Click on the envelope icon above and select "Go to Email" to get the password you need to view your marks.

Final Exam

The final exam is scheduled for Wednesday, May 25 from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM in SW1-2019.

Note the 8 (not 8:30) start time to allow for the 3-hour exam.

It will be open-book and will cover all of the material listed in the learning outcomes section of each set of lecture notes.

Please see update above: the exam has been re-scheduled to May 18.

Proposal to Re-Schedule the Final Exam

There has been a proposal to re-schedule the final exam one week earlier: moving it from May 25 to May 18 from 8:30 to 11:30.  This would help alleviate the stress of a crowded exam week schedule.

To accommodate this change we would have to make the following changes to the lab/lecture schedule:

I've been told that the conflicting labs (Telecom Fundamentals) are now finished which makes it possible for all students to attend both Wednesday and Thursday morning lab sessions.  Please let me know if this is not the case for you.

We will discuss this in class this afternoon (Monday, May 9).  Because some students may have different long-standing time commitments or different lab/lecture schedules, this change will require unanimous approval.  Please let me know, preferably by e-mail, if you have any objections to this change.

Final Exam Rescheduled

I have received no objections so the final exam will be re-scheduled to May 18 from 8:30 to 11:30 in SW1-2005.

We will have a three-hour lecture tomorrow (Wednesday, May 11) from 8:30 to 11:30 AM starting in the regular classroom (SE12-309) and then moving to SE12-313 for the second two hours.

We will have an open lab on Thursday May 12 from 8:30 to 10:30 for those that would like to finish an incomplete earlier lab.

Please check your marks

Everything except the final exam has been marked.  Please check your marks.  The marking scheme explains how things were marked. The lowest lab mark and any labs or assignments for which a medical certificate was provided should have been omitted from the calculations. Please check the marking and the calculations and let me know if you have any questions.

Final Marks

The final exam has been marked and the unofficial final marks computed.  Please check your marks and let me know as soon as possible if you have any questions.

The final exam minimum/mean/median/maximum marks were 7, 17, 17 and 25 out of 25.

The final mark min/mean/median/max were: 33, 78, 81 and 97 percent.

The distribution of final exam marks is shown below:

If you would like to see your final exam I can scan it and e-mail it to you.
