ELEX 3525 Pre-Lab Tutorials

Lab-Volt is a company that makes computer-aided teaching software called Mind-Sight.  This software can be used with the special-purpose lab hardware that you will use in the lab to generate signals typical of those used by digital communication sytems.  The software can also be used by itself to provide self-paced tutorials.

To prepare for your lab you should use the Mind-Sight software to run through the following tutorials before your lab session:

Digital Communications 2 version 2:  - Circuit Board Familiarization: Fundamentals

• Line Coding: Fundamentals
• Line Coding: Encoding: Discussion
• Line Coding: Decoding: Discussion

Running the Mind-Sight Software in BCIT Computer Labs

You can run the Mind-Sight software on the computers in BCIT's computer labs but you will need to download the software from BCIT's Mind-Sight server each time you use it.  The installation process should only take a few minutes.

The procedure is as follows:

Step 1 - Install the Mind-Sight Client Software

• use a web brower to go to: http://mindsight.ad.bcit.ca
• log in using your BCIT ID as the username and the last four digits of your ID as the password
• go to Main Menu -> Downloads
• download the Mind-Sight software and run the installer (choose  "run anyways" when prompted)
• when installing the software choose the supplied defaults, except for the server address, which should be set to:

mindsight.ad.bcit.ca

Step 2 - Run the Mind-Sight Client Software

• click on Windows start icon -> All Programs -> Lab-Volt ->  Mind-Sight -> Mind-Sight
• log in using the dialog at the bottom left with your BCIT ID as the username and the last four digits of your ID as the password
• from the course list on the left select Digital Communications 2 ver. 2

Complete the tutorial sections listed above before your first lab session.  During your lab you will complete the Procedure parts of these sections.
