Music Bio
Tissaphern Mirfakhrai is a student at the University of British Columbia. He has studied composition with Prof. Stephen Chatman at UBC and privately with Dr. Ramona Luengen. Mirfakhrai has studied Piano with Bernard Duerksen, a student of Peter Katin, and Harmony with Christian Meyers both at the The Conservatory of British Columbia.
Before moving to Canada, he studied in his native Iran. He studied harmony and counterpoint with Dr. Mehran Rouhani, a student of the late Sir Michael Tippet and studied composition with Abdulreza Sajjadi (professor of the University of the Arts, Tehran) and with Dr. Ahmad Pejman, arguably the most prominent figure in Iranian classical music today. He has also studied the principles of musical performance and ear training with Dr Sharif Lotfi, the chair of the Music school at the University of Arts in Tehran.
In other related areas, Mirfakhrai is a member of ENSC Trio with Shirin Farrahi (Violin) and Wayne Chen (Cello), with repertoire ranging from Haydn and Schubert to Mirfakhrai’s own compositions and arrangements. He has been a member of the SFU choir from 1999 to 2001. Mirfakhrai also holds degrees in electrical engineering and is a published author and poet.
