South Asia Trip (Sept - Dec 2002) Udaipur
(Lake City) |
Udaipur was by far my favourite city in North India and I made some good friends and had some wicked experiences there. I was there between November 18-21 and spent my time seeing all the sights and talking to artists and shopkeepers. I did most of my shopping for paintings, arts and crafts from here. Udaipur is famous for many things and is considered the Venice of the East. The James Bond movie, Octopussy was shot in Udaipur and the Lake Palace Hotel, which has its most expensive room at $550USD for a night. | |||
The city is surrounded by two lakes and hills and the sunsets are beautiful. The first day I was there, I just walked around for about 4-5 hours exploring the city and its outskirts
The main sights to see in Udaipur are; City Palace Complex - largest palace complex in Rajasthan Moti Magri (Pearl Hills) - gardens and statues commemorating history of Udaipur Sajjan Niwas Gardens - huge park in the middle of the city with mango, apple, banana orchids and gardens, and a zoo Jagdish Temple - Indo-Aryan temple |
Miscellaneous pictures of the places I went to and people I met.
I rented a scooter for a day to see the sights around Udaipur. in particular I rode out about 10-15 km to see; Badi ka Talab (Tiger Lake) - a mammoth artificial lake flanked by hills Monsoon Palace - palace constructed by Maharana Sajjan Singh in late 19th century. Everyone goes there to see the sunset and the ride up the hill is very picturesque.
