South Asia Trip (Sept - Dec 2002)

Pushkar
Population - Approx. 15,000
Small town in Eastern Rajasthan - Famous for Annual Camel fair
Main Languages: Marwari & Hindi

Pushkar was a big party as I went there specifically for the annual Camel fair that draws about 200,000 people and 50,000 camels, cattle and horses, that are traded, sold and bought for a week.  Together with this trading comes shopkeepers, hawkers, fairs, circuses, performances and all kinds of things.  It was basically a huge Indian carnival that lasted a week.  I was there for four days from November 15-19.  Pushkar is a short bus ride away from Ajmer, where I spent an evening sightseeing.

Camels

There were fields of camels just sitting around while their owners bargained and tried to trade, sell or buy.  We got to see a new bought camel getting its nose rings changed by its new owners

Performances

Every night there were performances by local artists from different villages around Rajasthan.  The most memorable one was these men from some village that ritually dance and walk on burning charcoals.  After that they ate the charcoals.  It was like they were in a trance

Miscellaneous

Miscellaneous pictures of the people I met, food I ate, place I stayed and stuff I saw daily.

Ajmer Sightseeing

Went to see Adhai-din-ka-Jhonpra mosque which according to legend was built in 2 1/2 days in 1153.  It was originally built as  Sanskrit college but turned into a mosque by Mohammed of Ghori in 1198.
