South Asia Trip (Sept - Dec 2002) Lahore |
||
My cousin Khurrum and I took a trip to Northern Pakistan and stopped in Lahore on our way back to Karachi. we were there for 3 days in late September and stayed with a friend, Rashad. Legend has it that Lahore was founded 4000 years ago! For 200 years, beginning in 1525 AD, Lahore was a thriving cultural centre of the great Mughal empire. | ||
The fort was mostly constructed by Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great in 1566. Every succeeding Mughal Emperor, Sikhs and British added a pavilion, palace of wall to the fort. This was my first exposure to Mughal architecture.

The rest of the city has numerous sites to see, including: Badshahi Masjid: made entirely of sandstone by Emperor Aurangzeb, the last Mughal Emperor, in 2 1/2 years. Minar-e-Pakistan: Landmark of Lahore commemorates the date when a resolution was passed in 1940 demanding a separate state for Muslims of South Asia Mausoleum of Emperor Jehangir: Tomb of the 4th Mughal Emperor s made of red sandstone and marble. Built by Queen Noor Jehan and Emperor Shah-Jehan in 1637. |
