South Asia Trip (Sept - Dec 2002)

Jaisalmer (Golden City)
Population - Approx. 50,000
Sandy outpost of Rajasthan
Main Languages: Hindi and Marwari

Jaisalmer was my second stop in Rajasthan and the main thing to do here was to take a camel safari.  The city is also known as the Golden City because of the honey colour imparted to its stone ramparts by the setting sun.  Its desert fort, which resembles a gigantic sand castle, is straight out of The Thousand and One Nights.   Jaisalmer's strategic position on the camel train routes between India and Central Asia brought it great wealth and the havelis built at that time  are the most exquisite in India.  The fort is unique to other Rajasthani forts because people still live in the fort with thriving businesses, restaurants and hotels.

Jaisalmer Fort

We stayed in a hotel insides the fort and walking away and into the fort entrance every so often was an amazing feat.  It felt like we were living in ancient times.

Camel Safari

For about $15 a day, Evan and I  took a camel safari for 2 days and 1 night.  we had two guides and three camels.  left early in the morning and travelled by camels for about 3 hrs, then had  lunch break and then continued for 2 hours to our night spot in the sand dunes.  The guides cooked  all the meals for us and set up our sleeping arrangements.
