South Asia Trip (Sept - Dec 2002)

Jaipur (Pink City)
Population - Approx. 2 million
Capital city of Rajasthan State
Main Languages: Hindi and Marwari

I started my travels in Rajasthan at Jaipur and was there for only 2 days on November 9.  Jaipur is known as the Pink City because of the pink coloured buildings and walls in it sold city.  The city was too crowded and hectic and after seeing all the sights on an organized day tour, I was ready to leave for a camel safari in a smaller city.  Met some interesting people on the day tour that I took and ended up travelling with Evan to Jaisalmer for a camel safari.

Jaipur City

The first day I was there, I walked around aimlessly through the streets of the old city and took pictures.  Included are also pictures of minor sights that I saw during the day tour

City Palace

In the heart of the old city, the City Palace occupies a large are divided into a series of courtyards, gardens and buildings.  It was built in sometime in the 18th century.  Nearby is the Jantar Mantar which is an ancient style observatory built in 1728. Each structure has a specific purpose, such as measuring the positions of the stars, altitudes and azimuths, and calculating eclipses.

Amber Fort

Amber was the ancient capital of Jaipur and was built in 1592 by Maharaja Man Singh, the Rapt commander of Emperor Akbar's army.

Nahargarh

Also known as the Tiger Fort, this fort overlooks the city from a sheer ridge to the north, and is floodlit at night.  The fort was built in 1734 and extended in 1868.
