South Asia Trip (Sept - Dec 2002) Islamabad |
|
My cousin Khurrum and I took a trip to Northern Pakistan and stopped in Islamabad first. we were there for 4 days. one day was spent touring around Islamabad, its twin city Rawalpindi and Taxila, which is an ancient settlement. Another day we went north and drove around the hills and visited four different hill stations. | |
The city of Islamabad was designed by M/S Constantinos Doxiades, a Greek firm of Architects in 1960 and construction began in 1961. The city came to life on October 26th 1966. It is a modern and carefully planned city with tree-lines streets, large houses, elegant public buildings and well organized bazaars. Crowds and traffic jams are rare. |
Taxila has numerous archeological sites dated from 600 BC to 500 AD. for over 1000 years, taxila remained famous as a centre of learning Gandhara art of sculpture, architecture, education and Buddhism in the days of Buddhist glory.
