South Asia Trip (Sept - Dec 2002)

Dhaka - Bangladesh
Population - Approx.
Capital city of Bangladesh
Main Languages: Bangla (Bengali)

I travelled to Dhaka by plane from Calcutta and was there for 2 weeks (October 18-November 4) visiting a close friend (Nadia-the shorter one) who was there on an 8-month internship.  I ended up hanging out with the other interns, some other people in the international community and made good friends with some local Bangladeshi guys who showed me a good time and the various parties and get togethers.

Old Dhaka

The old city of Dhaka is one of the most polluted cities in S. Asia and going there takes a lot out of someone.  There are quite a few historic sites to see though including the Pink Palace, an old Armenian church, and of course the organized chaos of people, cow-carts, man-carts, cycle rickshaws, scooters, baby-taxis, cars, buses and trucks all on one road at the same time.

Dhamrai

Dhamrai is a small city about 2 hr drive from Dhaka and it was nice to get away from the pollution of Dhaka for a day.  It is one of the few remaining places where you can find a small Hindu community still making one of a kind Shiva (and other Hindu deities) statues in the traditional manner.

26th Birthday

I arrived into Dhaka 2 days before my birthday and celebrated it there.  It had been 12 years since I had celebrated my birthday outside of Canada and away from family.

Tabith Party

One of the local Bangladeshi guys I met was Tabith and he invited us to his place one night.  We chilled there till late and talked, drank and listened to music.

UN Ball

The UN has an annual charity ball for all the expatriates and their friends for $50 a ticket.  So we got all dressed up (girls got dresses tailor made) and went for a 10 course meal with the rest of the international community.
