South Asia Trip (Sept - Dec 2002) Cochin |
|
Cochin was my first experience of South India and it was beautiful. I was there for 2 days from December 1-3, after which I left for another city in Kerala. Cochin has some of the better backwaters in Kerala so I took an organized tour. The city of Cochin is an amalgamation of Portuguese, Dutch and South Indian culture and was one of the most diverse cities I saw with Hindus, Muslims, Christians, and Jews living peacefully. Cochin is one of India's largest ports and a major naval base. It consists of a mainland Ernakulam; the islands of Willingdon, Bolgatty, Gundu, Fort Cochin, and Vypeen. All of these are connected by bridges and ferries. | |
Fringing the coast of Kerala is a vast network of lagoons, lakes, rivers and canals. these backwaters form a unique geographical formation and are the basis of a distinct lifestyle. Taking a backwater tour is one of the most peaceful and serene things I did on my trip and the beauty of the land, trees, water and people living there is best appreciated through the pictures I took. |
majority of the historical sites are on Fort Cochin. I took a ferry there from Ernakulam (mainland) and spent an afternoon walking around. There is the St. Francis church (oldest church in India), Mattancherry Synagogue, plethora of Chinese fishing nets, Mattancherry Palace etc.
