Calcutta (Kolkata) is the capital city of the state of West Bengal and has a population of approx. 15 million. The main language is Bengali. It is not an ancient city but in fact largely a British creation that dates back only 300 years and was the capital of British India until the early 1900's.
I was in Calcutta for 2 days while travelling from Dhaka, Bangladesh to Delhi from Nov 4-6 2002. I stayed with some family friends.
Highlights of Calcutta include the birthplace of Rabindranath Tagore, death place and tomb of Mother Teresa, The Victoria Memorial, Asia's largest annual book fair, India's first underground metro system, home of the busiest bridge in the world (450 m span)
