South Asia Trip (Sept - Dec 2002) Ahmedabad |
||
I was in Ahmedabad for 3 days between Nov 21-23, 2002 and stayed with some friends I made through another friend that lived there for a year. The first day I was in Central Ahmedabad and just walked around aimlessly and the next 2 days I was with friends in Satellite district just chilling and partying. The city was founded by Ahmed Shah in 1411. It was the headquarters of Mahatma Gandhi's revolutionary movement and the start of the Great Salt March. Ahmedabad is called the "Manchester of the East' due to its textile industries and smokestacks. It's a noisy and polluted city and extremely dusty. However, it is quite westernized and the youth I met were very trendy and fun to hag out with. | ||
The central part of Ahmedabad is Muslim dominated and there is no shortage of mosques in this area. The two main ones are the Jama Masjid and Sidi Saiyad's mosque. |
I was introduced by email to a friend's friends in Ahmedabad and they took great care of me by showing me around and entertaining me. I stayed at Anil's place and met a bunch of great guys; Xavier, Mayur, Udyan, & Tejis. |
Mahatma Gandhi's Ashram was located in Ahmedabad along the Sabarmati river. The ashram was founded in 1915 and still makes handicrafts, handmade paper and spinning wheels.
