IEEE Communications Society Vancouver Chapter www.comsoc.org/vancouver REMSAT - Real-Time Emergency Management via Satellite Tony Knight MacDonald, Dettwiler, and Associates Location: MacDonald, Dettwiler, and Associates 13800 Commerce Parkway (off No. 6 Rd.) Richmond, BC Monday, March 13, 2000 7:30-9:00 pm MacDonald Dettwiler (MDA) has teamed with the BC Forest Service (Protection Branch) to build and demonstrate REMSAT - Real-Time Emergency Management via Satellite for the European Space Agency (ESA). The objective of the project is to demonstrate and evaluate the use of real-time satellite communications, localization, Earth observation and meteorology services in emergency applications, specifically in the management and suppression of forest wildfires. MDA conducted an initial 'proof-of-concept' demonstration in September 1999, and has since been developing the hardware and software systems to be fielded and tested in three pilot demonstrations in 2000, including expected deployment to a major fire in the summer. Following a presentation about the system, a tour of the equipment now being integrated and tested at MDA will be given. Due to the venue, pre-registration is required. Please contact Dave Michelson <dmichelson@ieee.org> to sign up. About the presenter: Tony Knight is a system engineer at MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates. He currently leads the integration and test team for the REMSAT project. Mr. Knight has been with MDA for over 16 years, and involved in numerous programs ranging from synthetic aperture radar through to satellite-based communications and Earth observation systems. He received the B.A.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from UBC in 1981 and the M.Eng. from Carleton University in 1985. No-Host Dinner You can meet Tony Knight at a no-host dinner before the talk. Please join us at 6:00 PM at Green Acres Golf Course, 5040 No. 6 Rd. in Richmond, directly across the street from MDA. (We recommend that you park in the MDA lot and walk across to the restaurant.) All are welcome, although advance notice by e-mail to Dave Michelson <dmichelson@ieee.org> would be appreciated so that we can ask for a table of appropriate size. -- -o) Dave Michelson /\\ dmichelson@ieee.org _\_v
