Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2000 20:58:47 -0800 From: Dave Michelson <dmichelson@ieee.org> Subject: IEEE ComSoc - Tuesday, February 15, 2000IEEE Communications Society (Vancouver Chapter) http://www.comsoc.org/vancouver/ Tour of a Telus Cellular Base Station near BCIT Peter Trill, Telus Mobility Tuesday, February 15, 2000 7:00-8:00/8:00-9:00 pm The simplicity and convenience of modern handsets belies the sophisticated infrastructure required to support cellular telephony. Telus Mobility and IEEE ComSoc are hosting a technical tour of a Telus cellular base station near BCIT on the evening of Tuesday, February 15, 2000. In addition to describing the function and operation of the Base station equipment, the tour will touch on the problems of acquiring rights to a site, zoning and community issues, safety issues (RF exposure and tower rigging), maintenance issues, backup power requirements, and co-location with other providers. Since space is limited, the tour is limited to 30 people. One group of 15 will tour the site from 7:00-8:00 pm. The second group will tour the site from 8:00 - 9:00 pm. Pre-registration is required. Please contact Dave Michelson <dmichelson@ieee.org> to sign up, and to receive directions to the site. About our host: Peter Trill is a cellular radio engineer with Telus Mobility. His responsibilities include network RF equipment evaluation, radio system troubleshooting, and test equipment standards. He is the company's technical resource for RF safety standards, and for specialized equipment used by the security department to track fraud. He has also been involved in the development of the automated test methods and software used by the Telus Mobility technicians who maintain Telus cell sites. Prior to joining the cellular engineering team, Peter spent many years with BC Tel Radio Engineering where he was responsible for engineering VHF and UHF point-to-point radiotelephone systems in remote locations in B.C. For thirteen of those years, he was a member of team that developed and operated Autotel, an automated radiotelephone system that predated cellular. He is a graduate of Queen's University. -- -o) Dave Michelson /\\ dmichelson@ieee.org _\_v
