ComSoc (Vancouver) Announcements List ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. ComSoc Summer Evening Lecture Series Here's what we have lined up for the ComSoc evening lecture series over the summer: Mon, 21 Jun - The Evolution of Fax Standards and Technologies (George Pajari - Faximum Software) Mon, 12 Jul - Indoor Wireless Communication System Design (Kevin Sowerby - University of Auckland) Mon, 16 Aug - Hybrid Fibre Coax Networks (Dean Patterson - Rogers Cablesystems) All presentations will be held from 7:30 - 9:00 pm. Most, if not all, will be held at BCIT in the IBM Technology Building (SE 6), BC Tel Theatre (pending confirmation of room bookings). Please see http://members.home.net/comsoc-vancouver/ for more information. 2. ComSoc Fall Evening Lecture Series During the coming year, we plan to alternate university and industry presentations, give equal billing to wireless, wireline, and standards, and take maximum advantage of visitors. If you would like to volunteer to give a presentation, want to suggest a topic that you would like to see covered, or would like to help out in some other way, please let me know! 3. Free Half-Year ComSoc Membership Offer For those current IEEE members who are not yet members of ComSoc, an offer of a FREE half-year membership has been extended. New members will get Communications Magazine as well as other society benefits -- at no charge -- for the remainder of 1999. Just go to http://www.comsoc.org/bin/freeoffer/tgmail.htm and fill out the form before 16 August 1999. 4. Report on ICC'99 As many of you are already aware, ICC'99 was a great success. For the wireline people, the major topic seemed to be Next Generation Networks and the move from SS7 to ATM and IP-based systems. For the wireless people, the major topic seemed to be the growing need for wireless data and/or IP connectivity and the development of Third Generation (3G) wireless systems. The Vancouver Chapter of ComSoc recruited 15 volunteers to help with registration and the business centre/internet cafe and to act as room monitors for the mini-conferences and business applications sessions. Student volunteers from SFU, UVic, and UBC acted as room monitors for the technical sessions and tutorials. The Conference Organizing Committee passes on their thanks for a job well done! At the local members reception on Mon, Jun 7, ComSoc President Tom Plevyak and Vice President Ron Horn offered their support for local chapter activities. In addition to offering several generous rebate schemes, ComSoc will help to pay for the travel expenses of ComSoc distinguished lecturers provided that we arrange for the lecturer to visit other chapters in our general area (BC, Washington, Oregon, Alberta) at the same time. We'll be looking into this during the fall and spring. See http://www.comsoc.org/socstr/dlprog/index.html for details. 5. ComSoc (Vancouver) Announcements List The ComSoc (Vancouver) Announcements List has grown from 150 to nearly 200 subscribers during the past few weeks. In order to ensure that we have a reasonable turnout for our speakers, I would greatly appreciate your help in encouraging other members of the communications community in Vancouver to subscribe to this low volume, announcements-only mailing list. Thanks! -- Dave Michelson dmichelson@ieee.org
