Date: Tue, 25 May 1999 22:19:22 -0700 From: Dave Michelson <dmichelson@home.com> Subject: IEEE ComSoc (Vancouver) - Upcoming Events - June 1999Please pass this electronic newsletter on to any interested individuals. ----------------------------------------------------- IEEE ComSoc (Vancouver) - Upcoming Events - June 1999 ----------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. New IEEE ComSoc Chair - Dave Michelson 2. IEEE ComSoc Mailing List 3. Upcoming Conferences in Vancouver 4. Local Members Reception at ICC'99 - Mon, 7 Jun 1999 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. New IEEE ComSoc Chair - Dave Michelson As you may already be aware, I'm the new chair of the Vancouver chapter of the IEEE Communications Society. I would like to begin by acknowledging the fine job that Ed Casas, our outgoing chapter chair, has done during the past year. Thanks, Ed! A few words about my background: I've been a full-time research consultant to AT&T Wireless Services and AT&T Labs-Research since 1996. While I'm interested in all aspects of applied electromagnetics, my current work focuses on propagation modeling for wireless communications system design. I'm a senior member of the IEEE and chair the Propagation Committee of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society. If you want to know more, please check out http://members.home.net/dmichelson/. With the help of the local ComSoc membership, I'll be arranging a program of technical talks and other activities during the coming year. If you would like to join the local ComSoc steering committee or help out in some other way, please let me know! I can be contacted by e-mail at <dmichelson@ieee.org> or by telephone at (604) 985-0214. 2. IEEE ComSoc Mailing List The Vancouver ComSoc mailing list will remain the primary method by which we'll announce upcoming events. It will continue to be a low volume, digest-oriented, announcements-only list and will not be passed on to others inside or outside of the IEEE. As always, one can subscribe or unsubscribe from the mailing list by sending a message to majordomo@listhost.ece.ubc.ca with the words subscribe comsoc end or unsubscribe comsoc end in the body of the message. Of course, we'll also be posting announcements to the Communications Society part of the IEEE Vancouver Section web site, http://www.ieee.ca/www_vancouver/communications.shtml 3. Upcoming Conferences in Vancouver As you're probably already aware, several high profile telecommunications conferences are being held in Vancouver this year. The IEEE MTT-S International Topical Symposium on Technologies for Wireless Applications (Feb 1999) and the Canadian Cable Television Association Convention (May 1999) have already passed, but two more are coming up in June. Check out the URL's for more information. Canadian Wireless 1999 - 1-3 June 1999 http://www.cwta.ca/events/wire99.htm Note that Duthie's Technical Books is passing out a limited number of free passes for the Canadian Wireless 1999 trade show. ICC'99 - International Conference on Communications - 6-10 June 1999 http://www.icc99.com/ This is, of course, one of the biggest communications conferences in the world. This year's edition includes a vast selection of tutorials, research-oriented conference sessions, and business-oriented mini-conferences. 4. Local Members Reception at ICC'99 - Mon, 7 Jun 1999 Ron Horn, VP, Membership Development, IEEE Communications Society (and Director, Technical R&D at Nortel Networks in Brampton) is organizing a reception at ICC'99 for members of the IEEE Communications Society who reside in BC, Alberta, Washington and Oregon. It will be held on Monday, June 7 from 5:30 - 7:30 pm. If you're a ComSoc member, you should have received your invitation by mail. If not, please contact me for more information. -- Dave Michelson dmichelson@ieee.org
